NEW YORK (WABC) -- If you get hungry at night, there is a healthy way to snack according to a nutritionist from Lenox Hill Hospital.

You should avoid high sugar and high carbohydrate snacks like cookies. These can lead to a spike in a blood sugar, making it harder to sleep.

It turns out a little fat can be a good thing.

"Cottage cheese, a half a cup of cottage cheese is less than 100 calories, its low in carbohydrates, and high in a good source of fat as well as protein. This is a snack choice before bed," said Jordana Turkel, a registered dietitian with Lenox Hill Hospital.

Other options with protein and a little fat are hummus, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter or a mix of dried fruit and nuts.
