Underwater pumpkin carving competition is being held in Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vermont (WABC) -- If you're tired of routine Halloween celebrations, you may want to put on a wetsuit and go to Vermont.

That's where an underwater pumpkin carving competition was held.

All of the participants had their own methods to tackle the soggy competition, but with one goal in mind. They wanted to turn a pumpkin into a jack- o- lantern, on the bottom of Lake Champlain.

"Not that fancy but it's very difficult in the water. It will take us all 45 minutes to do it," said James Randolph.

"They compete for prizes by carving the best pumpkin and returning them to the dive shop to be judged," said David Beam of the Waterfront Diving Center.

As the carving began, so did the competition.

"Tying the knots under water was pretty cold but I spent a number of years in the boys scouts," said Zachary Foutz of the Waterfront Diving Center.

All of the money raised will go to the Divers Alert Network.
