NEW YORK -- After spending more than two decades as a professional dancer, Laurie Kanyok is giving back by nurturing the next generation of young artists.
Kanyok is the founder of Kanyok Arts Initiative (KAI), an intimate training program in New York City for teens aspiring to a career in the performing arts.
"The idea for us is to bridge the gap between the studio and the professional stage," she said.
Since 2018, students have been exposed to various art forms through diverse programs and personal mentorship. A typical day begins with a class on classical ballet, and then transitions into a lesson on modern dance techniques.
In addition to dance, students are also trained in singing and acting, giving them the trio of skills needed for them to become "triple threat" performers in the industry.
"Every single person here has a future in performing arts," said Lulu Simone, a student at Kanyok Arts Initiative. "Whether it's musical theater or in a modern company, whatever they want to do, she will take you from a student and make you a professional dancer."
It's no surprise then that KAI alumni have already found success early on in their careers.
Many have gone on to enroll in major arts programs and universities across the country. Some have found themselves performing on Broadway or with the Rockettes.
Burke Brickner is one of those students. Brickner will soon be attending the prestigious musical-theater program at the University of Michigan, where he will pursue a bachelor of fine arts.
"KAI has provided me with training and opportunities and connections to make that goal of mine a reality," he said.
In celebration of its upcoming fifth anniversary, Kanyok Arts Initiative will host the KAI Gala at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 30. The event's guests of honor will be Tony award-winning director-choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and Marguerite Derricks, an award-winning choreographer.
The Kanyok Arts Initiative fosters the diverse talent of students coming from all across the country, some receiving scholarships in order to partake in the program. You can make a donation to KAI's Tomorrow Fund, which will support future generations of KAI students and help expand the performing arts resources available to them.
