Brooklyn teens OK after getting lost in Bear Mountain State Park

BEAR MOUNTAIN STATE PARK, Rockland County (WABC) -- Two teens from Brooklyn who disappeared while hiking at the Bear Mountain State Park in Rockland County, have been reunited with their families.

A community leader said the boys were located in the woods around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The 16-year-old boys were among six hikers who got separated from a group Thursday afternoon. Four of them made their way back to the group, but two remained lost.

As night fell, volunteers from the Hasidic community descended on the 5,000 acre park, trying to assist in the search but there was no sign of the teens.

The two spent the night wandering in the park. Friday morning, they encountered a hiker, and asked to use his cell phone. One of the teens called his father to tell him he was OK. However, the cell signal dropped during the call.

The hiker guided the teens back to a path where they were rescued by park police.

The boys were attending the Stoliner Camp, a Jewish summer program, and returned to camp Friday after they were found.

"They were a group of six friends going on a hike and they decided to take a turn off a trail and they got lost," said volunteer Jack Meyer. "Four of them made it out and the other two made it a different way."
