1 dead in Long Island motel fire
Kristin Thorne reports from the scene in North Amityville, where over 100 firefighters responded to the early morning fire.

NORTH AMITYVILLE (WABC) -- One person was killed, and several others were rescued from a fire early Sunday morning at a motel on Long Island.

The fire was reported at about 5:35 a.m. at the Sayonara Motel on Route 110 in North Amityville.

Suffolk County Police say the victim was residing in a room on the second floor and was overcome by the fire. He has been identified as 56-year old Kevin Furey.

The building was evacuated. At least four people had to be pulled from the second floor of the motel and were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Bethpage.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. Over 100 firefighters responded and brought the fire under control.

The fire does not appear to be criminal in nature, investigators say.

56-year-old Kevin Furey was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Red Cross helped half a dozen people with food, clothing and shelter.

The motel is used as living quarters for some low-income families.
