MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- A day after reassuring Muslims that despite concerns over prejudice during the administration of Donald Trump, New York City would protect them, Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to meet with leaders Friday.

"I would say to Muslim New Yorkers who, of course, are fearful at this moment, we have your back and we will protect you," he said.

De Blasio singled out Muslims Thursday when discussing how the city "respects all people."

He plans to meet with Muslims later Friday, delivering remarks at the Islamic Society of Mid-Manhattan on East 55th Street.

After that, he will go to a synagogue, Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, on West 30th Street.

"We're standing by our values and that we will fight to protect our values," he said. "And, again, a whole lot of what happens in the city is based on what the city government does, not what the federal government tells us to do."
