NEWARK (WABC) -- A police chase through the streets of Newark Thursday morning ended with a violent crash and the arrest of one suspect.
Police say the suspect assaulted an officer during a drug deal in the West District around 9:30 a.m., then took off in a stolen Jeep.
That vehicle then slammed into another car at the intersection of Market Street and University Avenue.
The impact sent the car up onto the sidewalk and through a fence, injuring two people inside. The pair, believed to be a mother and son, was pinned in the car and had to be extricated.
The suspect, who was also hurt, was taken into custody.
"He tries to run from them, and they point guns at him," eyewitness Susan Cuffar said. "And as soon as they pulled the guns on him, he threw himself on the ground."
All three were taken to area hospitals, but police say their injuries are not life threatening.
