18 arrested in gang shootings across Brooklyn
N.J. Burkett reports on the arrests of 18 suspects in connection with shootings in Brooklyn.

CANARSIE, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Eighteen people were arrested in connection with 10 separate shootings in Brooklyn, most considered gang retaliations that put innocent people in the crossfire, authorities said Wednesday.

In one shooting, a young child was playing on a scooter when a gunman allegedly started firing nearby. Luckily that child escaped injury, but a 25-year-old man was killed and a 60-year-old innocent woman paralyzed in two other incidents.

Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson, together with NYPD Commissioner William Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio, announced the arrests of the suspects, charged in a 76-count indictment with conspiracy to commit murder, weapons possession and other charges.

"We must never allow violent street gangs to take over and terrorize our communities by going on hunting expeditions and roaming our streets shooting and killing people at will," Thompson said. "This indictment makes clear that we will note cede our streets to armed criminals but will do everything in our power to keep our streets safe for all.:

Thompson said 15 of the defendants are being held without bail, while another defendant is awaiting extradition from New Jersey and two others are being sought. They face various penalties ranging from 25 years to life for second-degree murder and up to 25 years for second-degree attempted murder. All of the defendants are charged with second-degree conspiracy for which they face up to 25 years.
