Man seriously hurt after push down subway station stairs in random attack at Columbus Circle

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A man was pushed down stairs at the Columbus Circle subway station, apparently by a stranger. Now he's in intensive care after this random attack.

Jose Barrios was headed home from the midtown restaurant where he works Sunday night. He intended to take the A train from Columbus Circle. He never made it.

"When I got the call from the police, they found him unconscious on the platform," said Laura Guerrero, the victim's wife.

Barrios, 31, looked like he had been beaten, but he told police he was pushed from behind down a flight of stairs at the Columbus Circle train station by someone he'd never seen before.

"He was with a brain bleed, fractures on his face, and he was unconscious on the platform, and here in the hospital he wasn't himself for the first 24 to 48 hours," Guerrero said.

Barrios has two children who haven't seen him now in three days and Laura, who almost didn't recognize him when she did.

"He was confused, he was not talking, he was very hurt and there was blood all over him," Guerrero said. "It was very scary to see him that way."

Barrios is at New York Presbyterian Hospital, where doctors are doing brain scans to figure out how bad the injuries are.

The stranger who did this to Barrios is still out there.

"Hopefully whoever did this is caught so it doesn't happen to anybody else, because now I'm worried because he comes to work here in the city and I don't know if he's going to be OK riding the subway," Guerrero said.
