Panic erupts after gunshots ring out near Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN, New York (WABC) -- Crowds of people went running after gunshots rang out near Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting happened just after 2 p.m. near the Target at the intersection of Fort Greene Place and Hanson Place. This is in close proximity to Barclays Center.
Brianna and Brielle were heading to the mall.
"I was walking with my mommy, and then I heard a boom, and then pop, pop, pop and then mommy saw all the people running, and then mommy started running," Brielle said.
"I thought it was a firecracker, and then I realized it was shooting, and the person next to me had gotten shot in the ankle," Brianna said.
Surveillance video shows that moment, the shooter pulls the gun from his waistband and opens fires, the man in the blues shirt goes down, shot in the ankle.
"And the guy was going, 'Who wants some? Who wants some?' And then we ran over, I had to run behind down South Portland with my daughter in my arms," Brianna said.
There were hundreds of people on the street.
"Thank God, thank God that we only have one individual, in light of what's happened today in our country, thank God we only have one individual hit, thank God it could have been a lot worse," said Dep. Chief Vincent Didonato, NYPD.
The gunman ran and police are still looking for him. The 50-year-old man who was shot, Ellison Ingram, was on his way to work and is in stable condition at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Police say they don't know if he was an intended target or an innocent bystander. He told police he was walking past an argument between two unknown men when he was shot.
The gunman only shot one person, but he terrified a whole lot more.
"She was scared! Even now she's still scared. She was going, 'Mommy, I don't want to die, I don't want to die.' Like it's scary, you come downtown to shop and then it's like gunshots," Brianna said.
The shooting was captured by surveillance cameras. NYPD released this video of the gunman, with the hope someone can help identify him:
