PARKCHESTER (WABC) -- Police are looking for the driver of a van who hit a man walking across the street in the Bronx, and just kept going.

It happened Thursday night in the Parkchester section.

There's dramatic video of the hit and run. A warning, the video is quick, but nonetheless graphic.

You can watch as a man trying to cross a Bronx street is hit by a white van. The driver slowed down after impact, but doesn't bother to stop, leaving the pedestrian lying on the pavement.

Pedestrians froze in place, and drivers hit their brakes, all trying to help the man.

"That's crazy ludicrous I can't believe it I feel bad for the gentleman," a resident said.

The NYPD Highway Patrol Unit gathered evidence at the scene including surveillance video from a nearby Laundromat.

You can see the pedestrian crossing mid-block around 6:45 Thursday evening, about a hundred yards from the crosswalk at White Plains Road and Westchester Avenue in the Parkchester Section of the Bronx.

Residents say something needs to be done about this intersection.

"Couple apartments over here they try to make it easier by crossing right here, it's risky, but nobody's following it right here cause it's a huge street with two lanes," said Sayeed Sakid, a resident.

"This is an ongoing problem for a few years now and they really need to fix this intersection. There are a lot of accidents that's happening, a lot of people, I've been here for 25 years of people of gotten killed because of that light," said Richard, a resident.

The victim is in critical condition at Jacobi Hospital with head trauma.
