BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WABC) -- On Monday, a woman was rescued as she threatened to jump from the Kosciuszko Bridge for two hours.
The woman climbed down the Brooklyn-bound side of the span just before noon. When police arrived on the scene, they found her on the outside of the bridge, on top of a pipe.
The woman, 45, of Brooklyn wasn't responsive to either Kinsella and Stefanakos but they took turns engaging her in conversation, letting her know they were there to help.
"I tried to convince her that no matter what, we would be with her every step of the way," said NYPD Detective Meghan Kinsella. "He would talk and I would talk. I didn't even realize I was there for two hours. I was completely focused on her."
NYPD Detective Steven Stefanakos also helped talk to the woman and prevent her from jumping.
The two were able to convince her and she pulled back onto the roadway just before 2 p.m. They reached over, grabbed her and pulled her to safety. She was transported to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment.
Investigators say the woman who was rescued is a Polish immigrant who has one child and is going through a tough divorce.
