PATCHOGUE, Long Island (WABC) -- Police say an officer shot and wounded a driver suspected of drunken driving during a traffic stop on Long Island.

Suffolk County Police say 34-year-old Michael Shear was stopped in the parking lot of a supermarket in Patchogue.

The driver fled in his vehicle, briefly dragging an officer.

After a pursuit of several miles, Shear was stopped again on North Ocean Avenue in Medford.

According to police, the driver did not comply with an officer's commands and resisted arrest.

The officer discharged his weapon one time, striking Shear in the shoulder.

He is in stable condition at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Shear, of Holtsville, is charged with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment, and fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle.
