NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The head of New York City's Office of Emergency Management is stepping down.

Joseph Bruno announced his resignation Wednesday, effective June 27.

Bruno is 70 years old and has held the job since he was appointed by the Mayor Michael Bloomberg a decade ago.

Bruno has said that Superstorm Sandy was his biggest challenge in over 40 years of public service. He played a large role in helping the city prepare for Sandy, as well as several other severe snowstorms.

The former judge and the city's fire commissioner began working in city government more than 40 years ago under Mayor John Lindsay.

Mayoral spokeswoman Marti Adams did not say if Mayor Bill de Blasio had chosen a successor.
