FORDHAM, Bronx (WABC) -- A 20-year-old man has been charged following a confrontation involving a stolen SUV that left several NYPD officers injured in the Bronx on Sunday evening.
According to police, Angel Robles of the Bronx was arrested Monday night and charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm. Investigators have not said whether the weapon charge is directly connected to the stolen vehicle incident.
The incident unfolded around 6 p.m. Sunday on East Fordham Road after police received an alert from a license plate reader that a stolen silver Kia Sportage with New Jersey plates had entered the area.
According to the NYPD, officers tracked the SUV and surrounded it near 82 East Fordham Road after it pulled over. Police ordered the vehicle's three occupants to get out, but officials say the 18-year-old driver refused.
Instead, the driver allegedly moved the vehicle back and forth, striking a sergeant who was standing outside the SUV and hitting several other officers during the encounter.
Authorities say an officer then climbed onto the hood of the vehicle and fired a single shot, striking the driver in the arm.
The 18-year-old suspect was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and is recovering in stable condition. He remains in police custody.
Police are still searching for a third person who exited the SUV before the confrontation escalated.
The injured officers were transported to local hospitals. Officials say all have since been released, although the sergeant remained hospitalized overnight for observation. Everyone involved is expected to recover.
"This incident was captured on body-worn camera footage and is being investigated by the Force Investigation Division," Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo said during a news briefing.
Police say the suspect was previously arrested in February in connection with a shooting within the same precinct and faces multiple felony charges from that case. Additional charges are now pending in connection with Sunday's incident.
