Giants reach 2-year extensions with Jameis Winston, Jon Runyan

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants extended backup quarterback Jameis Winston through the 2028 season on a two-year extension worth $13 million, sources told ESPN.

The Giants also agreed to a two-year extension with guard Jon Runyan on Sunday. The deal is worth $22 million and includes $21.5 million guaranteed, agents Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Winston gets two years added to his current contract, which has him signed for just over $4 million this season. He's set to serve as the backup to Jaxson Dart.

Winston, 32, serves as a contingency for the second-year quarterback, who plays a physical brand of football and has been prone to trips to the medical tent. Dart missed a pair of games during his rookie season with a concussion.

Runyan, 29, was entering the final season of a three-year, $30 million deal and is entrenched as the team's starting left guard. His extension further accentuates the stability of the Giants' offensive line. New York returns four starters and only center John Michael Schmitz remains unsigned for multiple years.

The Giants signed Winston as the backup to Russell Wilson last offseason for two years and $8 million. They then picked Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. When Dart took over as a starter early last season, Winston slotted in as the backup.

Winston started two games last season. He completed 56.1% of his passes for 567 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in three appearances. He also caught a touchdown pass in one of the more memorable plays of the season.

In addition to his ability to start games, Winston is looked at as a solid veteran presence and calming influence in the locker room. He's one of the oldest and most experienced players on the roster.

"Jameis is a great leader, man," running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. said earlier this summer. "He's a great teammate. He's always there. He's always helping out [second team], [third team], even the [starters], man. He's always picking us up. So, I think with Jameis and Jaxson, we have a great quarterback room."

The Giants also have Jake Haener on the practice squad as a developmental quarterback.

Winston and his oversized personality have thrived off the field during his short time in New York. Winston appeared on the Fox pregame show in 2025 during the Giants' bye week and was a correspondent during this year's World Cup.

Dart has spoken glowingly about Winston's influence and support. The duo has worked seamlessly over the past 18 months.

Winston has experience as both a starter and backup in the NFL. He has started 89 career games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who selected him with the No. 1 pick in 2015;New Orleans Saints;Cleveland Browns; and Giants. He has thrown for 24,792 yards with 156 touchdown passes and 113 interceptions while amassing a 36-53 career record.

He expressed an interest last year in remaining in New York even though there could be starting opportunities elsewhere.

"When a team gives me the opportunity and believes in me, they give me a job, I want to play for that team and do my best for that team. I don't care what the record is, I don't care what the circumstances, situation or facts is, I always say what I want for myself, I want for everyone," Winston told ESPN. "I'm a solutions-oriented guy, so I want to be a part of the solution. I don't just want to run away when things get bad."

The Giants are looking to turn things around this season under new coach John Harbaugh. They went 4-13 in Winston's first year with the team.br/]
