Long Island rescue group saves dogs from Puerto Rico

FORT PIERCE, Florida (WABC) -- A Long Island animal rescue group is making sure the animals impacted in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico aren't forgotten.

The Guardians of Rescue tells Eyewitness News they have saved 72 dogs from the island.

The dogs arrived at a hangar in Fort Pierce, Florida on Thursday night.

Some of the dogs will be brought to New York.

"There are animals that are suffering, as they have no food or water and no medical care. We will do our best to help as many as we possibly can," said Robert Misseri, the founder and president of the rescue group.

Guardians of Rescue plans to return to Puerto Rico next week to rescue more dogs.

The group also rescued animals after Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida.
