16-year-old struck by 2 cars in Queens hit and run

JAMAICA, Queens (WABC) -- A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured after being struck by two cars during a hit and run in Queens.

Relatives say Andre Brandon Gonzalves was riding his bike in front of his grandmother's house on 143rd Street in Jamaica around 7 p.m. Friday when he was hit by two vehicles. He had just received the mini-bike as a gift, and his father said he had no time to react.

"Dead-on impact," Andreas Gonzalves said. "And for you to just hit him like a dog on the street, and you know what you just did, and you just had audacity to just cover your face and keep on driving."

Andre is currently hospitalized with a collapsed lung, bruised lungs, a broken right femur with severe ligament damage, a crushed knee, and extensive lacerations to his right arm and both hands.

"He is going to play for John Adams, he is supposed to start training, and I guess now that's not possible," Andreas Gonzalves said. "He is in good spirits. He is in tremendous pain."

His aunt, Penelope "Ragu" Raghoo, said speeding happens on the street all the time, where children play.

"We tried to sign a petition two years ago in regards to putting a speed bump here, and they denied it," she said. "(He) just had a blood transfusion. He has been losing a lot of blood."

He will require surgery and also needed many stitches.

"Have a heart," uncle Carlton Thomas said. "Just have a heart. He's 16. He got a great career in football. He just transferred schools. He didn't deserve this. He's 16."

Andreas Gonzalves has some pieces of the hit-and-run SUV, and he is confident that his neighbors, who have known the 16-year-old since birth, will find some images on their home surveillance cameras.

"This is a child," he said. "And you just took his future away."

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
