Driver's rear windshield shattered by rock tossed from bridge in Roslyn

ROSLYN, N.Y. (WABC) -- Police are investigating after a car was struck by a rock tossed from a bridge on Long Island Tuesday evening.

"I was approaching the overpass here doing 15-20 miles per hour," said Chris Longhito, a Selden resident.

That's when Longhito says someone hurled two rocks over an LIRR overpass, causing damage to his back windshield.

"My son, my 3-year-old, has his car seat in the back, so when it hit and I looked at all the glass and his car seat I thought God forbid he was in the car," Longhito said.

The father of four says it happened Monday evening around 6 p.m. as he was leaving work in Port Washington.

He was heading south on Roslyn Road approaching the overpass around Locust Street when he saw something fall.

"I saw a rock fall because I was about this close. It hit the front, so when I looked up through my sunroof is when I saw someone lob the rock over the side, smashed in my rear windshield," Longhito said.

Longhito says he immediately pulled over on this side street, ran up this hill to try to find the person. But it was too late. They were already gone.

"The police, when he walked up there to take a look, he says there was a bunch of these up there sort of lining between the side of the overpass and the railroad tracks," Longhito said.

Longhito says he's telling his story because he wants people to understand how serious this is.

"It's stupid, it's dangerous. I hope whoever did it never does do it again and hopefully gets caught so people will reconsider doing a stupid prank like that," Longhito said.

Nassau County police are investigating.
