Report: Iranian hackers gained access to control system of dam in Rye

RYE, New York (WABC) -- There are reports of a hacking attack on a dam in Westchester County.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Iranian hackers were able to access the control system of the Bowman Avenue Dam in Rye.

It happened in 2013, and the breach sparked security concerns that reached the White House.

The systems that were hacked in the still-classified breach control water flow and drawbridges, and could be used to create an explosion or flood.

The report, quoting investigators familiar with the matter, said hackers didn't take control of the dam but probed the system.

The Journal said the dam intrusion illustrated a concern for U.S. officials that "America's power grid, factories, pipelines, bridges and dams, all prime targets for digital armies, are sitting largely unprotected on the Internet."
