Severe weather downs trees, causes flooding in NYC area

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Strong storms moved through the Tri-State area Friday evening, prompting watches and even a tornado warning while also toppling some trees and powerlines.

A tornado watch was in effect for most of the region, including New York City, until 10 p.m. Friday.

A tornado warning was also in effect for central Dutchess County until 4:30 p.m. The National Weather Service said a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Red Oaks Mill or near Poughkeepsie, moving northeast at 20 mph.

Dutchess County officials said there were no reports of any tornado touchdowns in the county. Residents reported some damage in Red Oaks Mill and LaGrange, but nothing significant.

Most of the damage was trees and wires down and some minor street flooding. Severe flooding was reported in Chappaqua in Westchester County.

In New Jersey, the hardest hit areas were Warren, Morris and Middlesex counties, and nearly 2,300 customers were without power Saturday morning.
