NEW YORK (WABC) -- Looking to expand your wardrobe and help a good good cause? Well, the Spring Opening Event gets underway Wednesday, and proceeds benefit The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering.
There's a quiet frenzy in the days before the big spring opening sales event, as furniture is moved, jewels are displayed and clothing sorted.
"We always show the best of our merchandise," Lavinia Blanca Snyder said.
She is the president of The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering, a volunteer organization that for 70 years has been raising money for education, research and patient care. The Society Boutique on Third Avenue generates money year round by selling gently used items.
"We like everything that is a little bit special," she said. "So it can be ladies' accessories such as handbags, jewelry, shoes, scarves, dresses, shirts, men's shirts, jackets, all sorts of things there as well. Home goods, lots of different things that we sell here are for the home."
Designer Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss donates right from her own closet.
"It's a win-win for everyone," she said. "It's nice to go through the closet...lighten your life a little bit, get rid of things that you have a harder time parting with knowing it's coming here."
And she also supplies the store with dresses that have never been worn.
"I donate product right from my warehouse," she said. "Carolina Herrera gives a lot of product. Tory Burch gives a lot of brand new products. Never been worn, just women who are really wanting to help support the cause."
It is a cause she also volunteers for, helping out with the pediatric prom at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as well as other events.
If you've never shopped the sale or donated to it, consider doing either or both. The spring opening sales event runs Wednesday through Saturday.
