United States international defender Aaron Long has signed a multi-year contract to remain at New York Red Bulls, the club said on Monday.

Long, 26, who was named MLS Defender of the Year last season, follows central defender Tim Parker in putting pen to paper on a new deal in New York.

He won his first cap for the U.S. last year, captaining the side in two January friendlies, and Red Bulls said they had signed him to the contract using Targeted Allocation Money.

Long helped the club concede only 33 times in 34 games last season, having joined in 2016 season when he signed for the club's USL affiliate NYRB II.

"This club gave me the opportunity I always wanted and I will be forever grateful for that," he said. "I will do everything I can to get silverware for this club."

"We are very excited to complete this signing and solidify Aaron's future with our club," Red Bulls Sporting Director Denis Hamlett said.

"Aaron has been key to our success as a team the last two seasons, and his personal achievements and recognitions speak for themselves. "

Head coach Chris Armas said Long had "grown into a leader within our group and earned the respect of everyone here."

He added: "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue working with him and watching him grow for our club and country."
