MARINERS HARBOR, Staten Island (WABC) -- A 38-year-old woman was found fatally shot in the head in her home on Staten Island early Thursday, and police are searching for a man who also lives at the residence.
Authorities say the woman was discovered shot inside the South Avenue home in the Mariners Harbor section just before 1 a.m.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her two children, ages 15 and 16, were home at the time of the shooting.
"I feel so sad for the young men, the two children had to see this," neighbor Scott Thompkinson said.
Another neighbor called the crime "out of the ordinary."
Police are looking for a suspect in a black SUV, possibly a Jeep Grand Cherokee, that fled the scene. He was described only as a male resident of the home, and he is believed to be either the husband or boyfriend of the victim.
Authorities are investigating whether this was a case of domestic violence, but further details about the man for whom they are searching have not been released.
Police were using K-9 units and had several heavily armed units out searching.
The victim has not yet been publicly identified.
