PURCHASE, New York (WABC) -- Students at Purchase College, SUNY broke the world record for the largest sushi roll.

Dozens of students gathered on the school's Great Lawn Wednesday morning in order to construct the world's largest California roll. They were joined by Food Network chef Jet Tila who said the event was a good way to bring the community together especially on National Coming Out Day.

Over 650 sheets of nori and 300 pounds of sushi rice later, the school's California roll came in at 504 feet. Their goal was only 500.

The record was previously set at 422 feet by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

The event raised money for two charities Food Bank of Westchester and Midnight Run, which both aim to help the homeless. Each charity received $1350.
