HS football star shot and killed in Camden
CAMDEN, N.J. -- A promising young high school athlete, just weeks away from graduation, died after he was fatally shot in the back in Camden.
Family and friends gathered Saturday afternoon in grief for 18-year-old Jameer Bullard.
Just one street over, the Woodrow Wilson High football star was gunned down.
"That was my heart and my nephew and I loved him to death. I don't know why they did this to him and I'm praying we find whoever did this to him," said Lynette Bullard, victim's aunt.
Shots were fired around 12:30 a.m. Saturday on the 1200 block of Mechanic Street.
Jameer and his 16-year-old friend, who we are not identifying for his protection, says they were walking on the sidewalk when Jameer pushed him and told him to run.
The friend says Jameer was hit and didn't even know it until he collapsed.
"He saved my life, that's my hero. I can't thank him enough because if it wasn't for him I could have gotten shot too," said the victim's friend.
Jameer was taken to Cooper University Hospital and later died from his injuries.
The teen was more than a high school football standout, he was a heavily recruited linebacker and running back who had dozens of offers including one from Temple University.
"He was the one who inspired me to play football. He was more than my big brother, he was my best friend, my right hand man, we were in this together," said Jamaad Kato, victim's brother.
Jameer's father Jesse Kato didn't want to show his face because his son's killer is still out there.
He says the teen hadn't made a college decision yet but he just knew he wanted to help his family.
"His thing was family. He was still worried about his family - man this came unexpected, we didn't expect this man," said Kato.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and they are working to determine a motive.
