Bronx girl hospitalized after uncle pours hot cooking oil on her

BRONX, N.Y. (WABC) -- A man was taken into police custody early Thursday morning, accused of pouring hot cooking oil on his niece.

According to police, a 13-year-old girl had been sleeping in her Bainbridge Avenue home around 4:40 a.m. when her uncle apparently poured hot oil on her. She had severe second-degree burns on her face and back.

The victim was hospitalized in serious condition and will be transferred to the burn unit at Cornell Medical Center, New York City police said.

The suspect is under arrest and will receive a psychiatric evaluation.

Charges are pending.
