Former Giants Coach Tom Coughlin volunteers at children's hospital, talks about his future

PATERSON, New Jersey (WABC) -- For Tom Coughlin, life after the Giants has now started.

He's not Coach Coughlin right now which is strange, but one thing is the same: his important work off the field.

He's no longer the coach of the Giants, but Coughlin is still committed to the Giants community.

"The idea we can be there to help and serve, that's what it's all about," Coughlin said.

Tuesday, Coughlin and his wife Judy were visiting their friends at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Paterson. They and the Jay Fund have been supportive for years.

"I've been sitting around a little bit myself feeling sorry for myself, as of something like this, nah, we're all blessed, we're all blessed, and let's hope some of those blessings will be shared with these families," Coughlin said.

It's moments like these that are so important to Coughlin, which is why he has no intention of giving up his work in the community. As for football, let's not call it retiring.

"Try this word, transitioning, transitioning into what I don't know, but I'm certainly not going to retire" Coughlin said.

Coughlin says his coaching days are not behind him, but it must be the right opportunity. The same goes for the consultant position he's been offered to stay with the Giants.

"I need to know what the role is, because I want to do best I can in the role, but I'm not going to look over anyone's shoulder. So if it's defined, and it's something that I can do and help with, then certainly it would be a consideration," Coughlin said.
