Upper West Side fire in New York City kills elderly woman

An 87-year-old woman died in a fire in an Upper West Side apartment building overnight Wednesday.

UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- An elderly woman died in a fire in an Upper West Side apartment building.

The 87-year-old woman died in a fifth floor apartment at 595 Columbus Ave., in a fire that broke out just before 1:30 a.m.

Four firefighters were treated for minor injuries battling the blaze.

The woman appeared to be smoking in her apartment, sparking the fire, fire officials said.
