VERNON, Conn. -- Vernon police say a 33-year-old man has been arrested after a social services worker driving him to a medical appointment reported he bit off part of her nose.

Police said the woman told officers that the man, who has a history of psychiatric conditions, became angry when she made a wrong turn.

She called 911 from a parking lot at about 9:15 a.m. Monday and was taken to Hartford Hospital. The man had run away.

Police said Aaron Goodwin Olmsted was taken into custody about half an hour later in South Windsor, where he lives, after a search by nearby police departments.

Olmsted is held on $500,000 bail on charges of first-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment. It is not immediately known if he has a lawyer to comment.
