WANAQUE, N.J. (WABC) -- On Wednesday, nervous but excited, 19-year-old Aaron Risher became the newest police officer in the Wanaque, N.J.

He has the badge, the hat, the radio and even the business cards to hit the streets. But on Wednesday, it was clear that he had something more important: the love of friends.

Aaron has been battling an aggressive form of muscular dystrophy which is taking aim at his heart. His love of cop television shows fueled a desire to be become a police officer, a dream that Capt. Ken Fackina of Wanaque Police Department helped make real Wednesday.

Aaron admits he was nervous.

Staff at the Wanaque Rehabilitation Center told Fackina about Aaron and he has been visiting the teen for months, talking about life as a cop, even giving Aaron homework.

Dozens of officers and center staff members came to the center Wednesday to celebrate their new colleague. He was sworn into his position by Mayor Dan Mahler and also awarded his official badge, #53, hat, shirts, business cards, and name plate by the Wanaque Police Department.
