Water main break in North Brunswick
Traffic is building up and residents are being asked to conserve water following a water main break in North Brunswick

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WABC) -- East Brunswick residents are under a boil water advisory following a major water main break on Ryders Lane in North Brunswick Township at Rutgers University.

A 30-inch main broke Thursday afternoon on the border of East Brunswick and North Brunswick; crews were assessing the damage, said Austin Kosik, the Office of Emergency Management coordinator for East Brunswick. The cause is unclear.

The main feeds into East Brunswick.

Residents of East Brunswick Township connected to the town's public water supply system are being told to boil their water before drinking. The Department of Environmental Protection said the main break may have compromised the quality of the water.

Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow to cool before using water to drink, prepare foods or brush teeth.

The Rutgers University Police Department is advising all drivers to avoid the intersection of Ryders Lane and U.S. Highway 1.

Delays are expected, and the roadway is presently closed and expected to remain closed.
