NEW YORK (WABC) -- Sunday will be noticeably cooler as increased cloud cover during the morning limits daytime warming. High temperatures are expected to reach only the lower to middle 70s.

While most of the day will remain dry, a brief spot shower is possible. Clouds should gradually give way to more sunshine during the afternoon.

The real taste of fall arrives Sunday night as skies clear and temperatures tumble. Many suburban communities will drop into the 50s by early Monday morning, while Midtown Manhattan is expected to remain closer to the lower 60s.

Labor Day itself is shaping up to be the standout day of the holiday weekend. Sunshine will dominate from start to finish, humidity levels will be even lower, and afternoon temperatures will climb into the middle and upper 70s. Dew points may fall into the 40s, creating some of the most comfortable air the region has experienced in months.

Beachgoers will find generally favorable conditions Sunday, although temperatures along the shore will stay cool with a northeast breeze of 5 to 10 mph. Ocean waves are expected to remain around 1 to 2 feet, with a low risk of dangerous rip currents. Water temperatures will be in the lower to middle 70s.

The beautiful weather continues into next week. Highs return to the lower 80s on Tuesday under comfortable conditions. Temperatures rise into the mid-80s by Wednesday as humidity gradually increases. Thursday looks warmer, breezier and more humid, with the possibility of a thunderstorm.

By Friday, conditions improve once again as cooler, less humid air returns. High temperatures are expected to settle back into the upper 70s, with sunshine and dry weather providing a pleasant end to the week and the beginning of the following weekend.
