Fast food chain Wendy's has removed the soda option for kids' meals, USA Today reports.
This means that soda is no longer listed as an option on the kids' menu, but if parents still wish to order it for their child, they are still able. Jr. Vanilla Frostys and Jr. Classic Chocolate Frostys are still on the kids' menu.
The fast food chain is the most recent to give into pressure from child health advocacy group. McDonald's recently made a similar commitment to drop soda from Happy Meals in 2013.
"When ordering a kids' meal, the customer is asked what beverage they prefer," Wendy's spokesman Bob Bertini told USA Today. "The change is the kids' meal beverage options which are shown on our menu boards." Bertini noted that Wendy's also began displaying images of healthier beverage options on their kids' menu, including milk, bottled water, and juice.
"Ensuring that our children can make healthy choices is an important part of raising them," MomsRising Executive Director and CEO Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner said in a statement from the Center for Science in the Public Interest. "When restaurants offer up sugary drinks as the default choice, it undermines those efforts. MomsRising and its members are delighted that Wendy's is now supporting parents in encouraging children to make healthy food choices."
Other fast food restaurants including Subway, Arby's and Chipotle do not have soda listed as a drink option on their kids' menu. However, Burger King still lists soda as an available item to kids on their menu, according to USA Today.
