Make mine a million dollar business

NEW YORK Now, there's an organization that wants to change that.

Eyewitness News Lauren Glassberg has more.

More and more women are starting their own businesses because they're sick of corporate America or because they want more flexibility. But to make that business a successful one, women are being encouraged to ask other women for a little guidance.

Nandini Murcurjee was supposed to go into architecture, but got side tracked by food.

"There was a market gap for fresh, flavorful and portable Indian food, and that's where the idea for Indian Bread Company started taking shape," she said.

The food is fast and the prices affordable. Nandini would like to take the Indian Bread Company the next leve.

That's where Count Me In comes in. The non-profit organization was started by Nell Merlino, the founder of "Take Your Daughter to Work" day.

"The motto of Take Your Daughter to Work day was making girls visible, valuable and heard," she said. "And what we're doing with 'Make Mine a Million-Dollar Business' is quite similar. We're making these women, business owners, very visible, making sure they're heard and certainly making sure they appreciate their value."

And to help women appreciate their own value, Count Me In offers the 'Make Mine a Million-Dollar Business" program, which includes competitions, coaching and lines of credit. And there's been plenty of success in the past three years.

"We have, out of 122 women, 30 of them got to a million last year," Merlino said. "Some of them in under a year. And it keeps happening."

The Indian Bread Company's profits are on the rise, thanks in part to Nandini tapping into to the great resources of other women business owners. It is something she wishes she had done even earlier.

"For example, it took me six months to learn how to do my inventory," she said. "And, you know, if i had someone to guide me, it would've probably taken, at the most, a week. So, it made me realize it's very important to have a mentor."

So if you are a woman business owner and you're not yet making a million, check out Count Me In.
