High school football coach arrested

Police say 24-year-old Anthony Bruno initially reported that money earned from a football fundraiser was stolen when the coaches' office at the high school was broken into Tuesday night.

Bruno, of Hempstead, also claimed his Blackberry cell phone was taken.

Upon further investigation, detectives realized that Bruno had pocketed the cash, about $540 collected during a hat sale -- and then made up the burglary story to cover his tracks.

He was charged with petit larceny, criminal mischief and making a false written statement. He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on April 7.

Bruno is an assistant varsity coach for the high school's football team. He is a 2006 graduate of St. John's University, according to the team web site.
