Bruno, of Hempstead, also claimed his Blackberry cell phone was taken.
Upon further investigation, detectives realized that Bruno had pocketed the cash, about $540 collected during a hat sale -- and then made up the burglary story to cover his tracks.
He was charged with petit larceny, criminal mischief and making a false written statement. He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on April 7.
Bruno is an assistant varsity coach for the high school's football team. He is a 2006 graduate of St. John's University, according to the team web site.
