Discounts on gas may begin soon

HARTFORD, Conn. - The move comes after the legislature voted overwhelmingly early Thursday in favor of a bill that would allow retailers to cut gas prices for cash customers. The legislation would ban oil companies from prohibiting the discounts in certain franchise agreements with retailers.

The proposed law would take effect immediately if Gov. M. Jodi Rell signs it. Rell supports the concept, but hasn't said yet whether she'll give it final approval.

Estimates vary on how much drivers could save at the pumps. Anywhere from 10 to 20 cents have been predicted. Blumenthal believes some stations will slash gas prices in order to get customers inside their stores to buy other things, like milk and candy.
