NEW YORK - --
Firefighters say a person has been seriously hurt in a fall at Shea Stadium during the Mets game. Officials told Eyewitness News that a 26-year-old man was critically injured after falling 25 feet from an escalator handrail near Gate D on the box seat level. He was rushed in critical condition to an area hospital.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, as the Mets played the St. Louis Cardinals.
The fall came less than four months after a fan lost his balance on a Shea escalator and fell two stories to his death in a section below the left field stands. (READ MORE)
The stadium's escalators were also the scene of a fatal fall in 1985, when a 21-year-old Yonkers man fell 100 feet.
This is the Mets' last season at Shea Stadium. A new stadium, Citi Field, is scheduled to open next year.
