Father accused of abusing own infant

FAR ROCKAWAY, Long Island A 20-year-old man is under arrest for allegedly beating his four-month-old daughter.

The baby is now in critical condition.

Relatives say Kevin Calender was babysitting his daughter when she ended up hospitalized with a number of serious injuries. Relatives are hoping she makes a full recovery.

The 4-month-old's grandmother broke down while speaking to Eyewitness News. She says little Sarah Dominique is her only granddaughter.

"She has blood on her brain. She's got broken ribs. She has blood around her heart, she has a collapsed lung," said Nancy Pastore.

Police say Calender physically assaulted his own child. It happened at his girlfriend's home in East Rockaway. Police responded to the home with a report of a baby unconscious.

"He's been a very devoting father. I know they've been having a little bit of problems lately. He was upset with my daughter. I don't know if that would cause him to do something like this," adds Pastore.

Calender is charged with recklessly assaulting his own child.
