Arrest made in fatal stabbing of EMT

BROOKLYN Jason Ruiz, 30, died early Sunday. Authorities arrested the 25-year-old suspect and charged him with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

The EMT was known for a heroic rescue of a woman who fell off a subway platform in June.

Investigators say the murder happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at 5914 Fifth Avenue, where Ruiz was visiting a woman he reportedly had some sort of relationship with, possibly an ex-girlfriend.

Police say Ruiz answered the door when the suspect, believed to be the current boyfriend of the woman, stabbed him twice in the torso.

The suspect then fled.

EMS responded and transported Ruiz to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead on arrival just after 2 a.m.

Ruiz became well-known when he and fellow EMT Juan Rios rescued a 31-year-old woman who fell on the subway tracks after suffering a seizure in July.
