Investigators said the victim had been stabbed multiple times inside her family's apartment in the 700 block of Empire Boulevard.
The girl's family was overcome with emotion as the body was removed from the home.
Investigators said the suspect may have fled down a fire escape.
They said the suspect may have been someone who the girl knew.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News that the family recently took in two distant cousins, both teenaged girls.
Police are looking to question at least one person who has not been located.
