Water main breaks on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND Water could be seen gushing from the ground in Port Richmond. The water main break happened when a crew from Granite Avenue Utility Corp., while contracting for Verizon, ruptured the water pipe when digging a trench.

Water spewed like a geyser out of a hole in the ground on the block between Nicholas and Treadwell avenues for about two and a half hours before DEP workers managed to shut off nine valves and stop the flow of water.

The water was between two and three feet deep.

Firefighters worked to pump the water and keep it out of basements.

Water service was restored to customers by late afternoon, but repairs were continuing into the evening.
