3 rare loggerhead turtles visit NY suburb

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. The federally threatened species of turtles were stunned by the sudden drop in sea water temperature and washed up on Cape Cod's beaches.

Robert DiGiovanni Jr., the director of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, says the "cold-stun" turtles have a condition similar to hypothermia in humans.

Volunteers transported the turtles from The New England Aquarium in Boston to a marine hospital in Riverhead.

Two turtles, nicknamed Jupiter and Junior, arrived Tuesday to join Herb, a loggerhead who arrived from Boston on Dec. 13.

The sea turtles will eventually be released in New England or Long Island.
