House explosion on Long Island

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. The explosion at 34 Meadow Lane off South Bayview Avenue leveled the house.

Suffolk police said two people inside the house had called the gas company moments before the explosion. The company told them to get out, and they did just before the blast.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud boom and seeing a fireball.

Shards of wood and furniture were scattered over the house's lawn and driveway after the explosion. One car was crushed by the home's roof.

Rich Brown says most of his belongings were destroyed but he feels grateful that he, his girlfriend and his two children escaped. He says he feels lucky the explosion happened during the day and not while they were all asleep.

Officials from the fire department and the gas company were on the scene.

The neighborhood was closed off during the investigation.

No one was injured.
