Fatal police involved shooting on Rt. 1

One person was fatally shot by police following a chase that ended with a crash that closed Route 1 in South Brunswick for the morning commute. Eyewitness News is told the suspect was shot following a police pursuit on northbound Route 1 sometime before 11 p.m. last night.

The pursuit ended near the County Road 522.

Police allege they ordered the man to surrender, but he refused and brandished some sort of weapon.

Assistant Middlesex County prosecutor Nicholas Sewitch says an officer struggled with the driver and shot the man.

No officers were injured.

Officials declined to name the driver or the police officer.

The northbound lanes of Route 1, from Ridge Road to County Road 522, were closed police investigation until just after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
