Lawsuit leads to cosmetic giveaways

NEW YORK The stores are giving away roughly $175 million in goods as the result of a 2003 California suit that alleged price fixing at more than a dozen department stores. The case was settled with no wrongdoing admitted.

Anyone who bought products from several companies, including Chanel, Christian Dior, Clinique, Estee Lauder, Lancome and L'Oreal between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003 is eligible for one piece of free merchandise.

As word of the giveaway spreads, lines at cosmetic counters have been growing.

The giveaways started Tuesday and will not last longer than a week. The cosmetics are distributed while supplies last, on a first come, first served basis.
