William Paterson cops shoot ex-student

NORTH HALEDON, N.J. The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office says 26-year-old Jack Sayegh of Franklin Lakes is in serious but stable condition at a Paterson hospital with a gunshot to the right shoulder.

University spokesman Stuart Goldstein tells The Record of Bergen County that university police Sgt. Pablo Vinas discharged his weapon during a struggle while trying to apprehend Sayegh.

Goldstein said officers spotted Sayegh breaking into a car on the North Haledon campus around 3:25 p.m. yesterday.

After a brief foot pursuit, Sayegh fled in a BMW, running at least five stop signs before being blocked by police cars.

Goldstein said Vinas approached Sayegh's car with his weapon drawn, and it went off as the two struggled.
