Brooklyn kicks off Restaurant Week

BROOKLYN It's a borough filled with as many diverse cuisines as there are people, and with the kick off of Restaurant Week in Brooklyn, borough president Marty Markowitz has spoken.

"As borough president, everything you eat, because of the power of Brooklyn borough president, is calorie free," he joked.

Which makes eating a fried Twinky a guilt-free pleasure.

It's the specialty at the Atlantic Chipshop in Brooklyn Heights, along with fried Snickers bars.

This week, you'll pay just $23 for a three-course meal. Fish and chips and wild mushroom mac and cheese are just some of the main dishes you can choose from.

More than 200 eateries taking part.

"It's the best publicity you can get," the Chipshop's Chris Sall said. "They do a great job, Marty Markowitz and the Brooklyn Borough President's Office, and there's not reason not to do it. It's a great way to kick off the season."

In terms of profits, the restaurants involved in this campaign actually take a hit this week, but with the number of new customers coming in, they make up for the loss down the line

"We get people from all over New York," Smoke Joint owner Ben Grossman said. "Also, New Jersey, Westchester and Long Island, who come out and get to try a new restaurant."

At the Smoke Joint in Fort Greene, nice and easy is their motto.

"Barbeque, to me, means slow-cooking food over wood and having a good time doing it," Grossman said.

Grossman loads up the smoker with hickory and maple. The chicken will cook for 2 1/2 hours and then go on the grill.

It's all part of a hearty plate with all the fixings, including St. Louis ribs, hot links and grilled corn. It's enough for two, and it costs just $23.
