Police chase ends in deadly crash

ELIZABETH Eyewitness News is told the suspect was firing at police while speeding through Elizabeth sometime before 2 a.m. this morning.

Police say gunshots were fired out of the roof of the suspect's vehicle.

The car reportedly crashed into a parked tractor-trailer at the intersection of Second Avenue and Butler Street.

Officials say heavily armed police officers approached the crashed car, and gunfire erupted.

According to police the officers returned fire while retreating. They then attempted to talk to the suspect using a bullhorn, but the driver did not respond. The officers again approached the vehicle, and found the suspect dead inside.

Authorities are investigating if police gunfire struck the suspect. Bullet holes were clearly visable in the driver's side door of the suspect's car. No police officers were injured.

The vehicle was stolen earlier this month.
