Subway 'stewardesses' get attention

March 26, 2009 9:18:48 AM PDT
Women who appear in the New York City subways dressed as 1940s stewardesses are being asked to change their official-looking Web site. The smiling women call themselves "MTA service specialists."

They also use MySpace and YouTube to offer gently cheeky commentary about service and fares.

They help mothers with baby strollers and encourage riders to be courteous.

Their origins are, well, a little mysterious.

The Daily News says the Metropolitan Transportation Authority wants the "stewardesses" to stop using its logo.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz quipped Thursday that the women should go to Albany to get lawmakers to support the transit system. The MTA approved fare increases and service cuts on Wednesday.
